Redefine Your Waistline

SJ Plastic Surgery offers Abdominoplasty in Virginia Beach to get you beach body ready

As your body ages, the tummy muscles relax and age too; if you have birthed a child, this can accelerate the effects. This can leave you with loose, flappy skin in the midsection that leaves you trying to hide it during swimsuit season. A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery that allows our board-certified surgeons to resculpt and define your abdomen, waist, and flanks. Our surgeons pride themselves on achieving natural-appearing results. Many patients have specific goals they wish to accomplish with their surgery, and at SJ Plastic Surgery, your doctor will spend the time with you to ensure those are met.

What is Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty) is a surgical technique that reshapes the abdomen and flanks. A tummy tuck involves the removal of excess, sagging abdominal skin. Depending on your particular goals and anatomy, your surgeon often combines skin removal with many or all of the following:

  • Tightening the abdominal muscles to create a slimmer waistline and firmer, flatter abdomen.
  • Restoring a youthful, natural-appearing belly button.
  • Liposuction of the stomach and flanks (“love handles”) to highlight your silhouette and narrow your waist or reduce troublesome fat deposits
  • Fat grafting to enhance your hips or buttocks is often called a Brazilian Butt Lift.

Who should get a Tummy Tuck?

The ideal tummy tuck candidates are at or near their ideal body weight. Tummy tucks are not as effective as a weight-loss tool and should not be performed in those who are significantly overweight. Those who benefit most from a tummy tuck will have any of the following:

  • Excess, sagging skin of the abdomen
  • Diastasis recti – this refers to the separation of the “six-pack” muscles
  • Bulging abdominal contour

During pregnancy, the growth of the baby progressively stretches out the muscles and skin and of the abdomen. After childbirth, the body may not return to its pre-pregnancy state. The skin often is loose and saggy in the lower abdomen. There may be stretch marks. The core muscles have also been stretched, resulting in diastasis recti and a bulging abdomen. A tummy tuck helps rejuvenate a woman’s body as it was before childbirth.

Types of Tummy Tucks

The doctors at SJ Plastic Surgery know the latest techniques and technologies to provide you with the ideal result you desire. Many different types of tummy tucks exist, and they will determine which is optimal for you depending on your anatomy and goals.

Full Tummy Tuck – this usually involves removing the skin between the belly button and the pubic area. The diastasis recti (or muscle separation) is repaired, resulting in a tighter waist, improved definition, and a flatter abdomen. The skin is then pulled down, and the incision is closed in layers with absorbable sutures. A new hole is created for the belly button to help it heal. Your doctor often recommends combining a full tummy tuck with liposuction to help sculpt the abdomen and flanks (also known as a “lipoabdominoplasty”).

Mini Tummy Tuck – a technique reserved when the primary issue is stretching out of the muscles, and there is minimal loose skin. A small amount of skin is removed from the lower abdomen, but the belly button remains attached to the surrounding skin. The core muscles are then repaired and tightened. An endoscopic approach may minimize the scar length. Liposuction may be used during this procedure to help shape the abdomen and waist.

Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

SJ Plastic Surgery strictly adheres to its patients' highest quality and safety. Your tummy tuck surgery will be performed in a surgical center or hospital. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes around three hours, depending on how much work must be done. You will meet a certified anesthesia provider on the day of surgery to make sure you are comfortable and asleep throughout the procedure. Your surgeon will spend a significant amount of time measuring and drawing before entering the operating room to ensure your scar is least visible as possible and in a concealed position beneath your underwear/bikini line. During the procedure, your surgeon uses significant amounts of local anesthetic (“numbing medicine”) to make sure you awake from surgery comfortably. After surgery, you may receive a surgical binder to help control swelling.

Recovery & Results

Tummy tucks are usually performed as outpatient surgery, meaning you go home the day of surgery and are not required to spend a night in the hospital. After surgery, you will be cared for in the recovery room to make sure you are fully awake and comfortable. A friend or relative will need to escort you home, and it is beneficial to have someone help around the house for the first few days. Your doctor will do everything possible to minimize discomfort from surgery. You will receive a local anesthetic (numbing medicine) during the surgery. You may be prescribed medications to reduce or alleviate post-operative pain and discomfort. We typically recommend taking 10-14 days off from work, but some may be able to return to work earlier.

It is crucial that you walk around frequently after surgery and not spend all day in bed. Activity involving carrying light weights begins two weeks after surgery. Cardiovascular exercise can usually resume after four weeks. Lifting heavier weights (more than 15 pounds) must wait until 6-8 weeks after surgery. You can expect to have some bruising and swelling in the areas treated. The swelling will begin to subside after two weeks. However, it is essential to have patience as the final result will be seen about three months after surgery. Please refer to our abdominoplasty instruction sheet to see answers to commonly asked questions before and after surgery.

Tummy TuckFrequently Asked Questions

What are the risks?

Abdominoplasty is a safe and effective procedure, and the procedure has a low risk of complications. However, some side effects include bruising, swelling, healing issues, and temporary numbness at the incision site.

How much does it cost?

Every tummy tuck experience is different based on anatomy and personal aesthetic needs. During your consultation, your doctor will discuss your surgical options, evaluate your areas of concern and devise a treatment plan unique to you. The cost of your procedure is discussed as well so you can be fully informed to make your next transformation.

What's the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck

If you have excessive sagging skin, you need a tummy tuck procedure to remove the excess. However, if you have excess skin and fatty tissue, you may be an ideal for a combined abdominoplasty and liposuction procedure.

Does my insurance cover it?

A tummy tuck is a surgical cosmetic procedure and is not covered by medical insurance. However, SJ Plastic Surgery offers payment and financing options for your convenience.

Will a tummy tuck get rid of my c-section scar?

It is standard for most tummy tucks to make the incision below the bikini line and extend it from hip to hip. By making the tummy tuck incision lower, excess c-section scar tissue, some stretch marks, and the c-section scar are removed, leaving a tiny but hidden incision that will heal nicely.

What will happen to my tummy tuck if I get pregnant?

Surgeons prefer that most women wait on having a tummy tuck until they are done having babies before getting a tummy tuck. However, if you get pregnant after your abdominoplasty, you may stretch out the abdominal skin or muscle. In that case, you may need to have your tummy tuck redone after pregnancy.
